## What is Spell & Grow?

Spell & Grow is a free spelling app for children aged 4 to 13. Your child's school uses it to set spelling practice, and teachers can see how your child is getting on. The app is free to download and use -- there is no cost to families for school-assigned spelling lists.

## How to Set Up

### Step 1: Download the App

Download **Spell & Grow** for free from:

- **iPhone / iPad:** Search "Spell & Grow" in the App Store
- **Android:** Search "Spell & Grow" in the Google Play Store

The app is free. School spelling lists do not require a paid subscription.

### Step 2: Create Your Child's Profile

When you first open the app, you will be asked to create a profile for your child.

- Enter your child's **first name** (this is the only information shared with the school)
- Choose an age-appropriate difficulty tier (the app will suggest one)
- Set a **parent PIN** -- this is a 4-digit code that protects the parent area

### Step 3: Open the Parent Area

- Tap the **lock icon** in the top corner of the app
- Enter your **4-digit parent PIN**

### Step 4: Tap "Link to School"

- In the Parent Area, tap **"Link to School"**

### Step 5: Enter the Class Code

- Type in the code your child's teacher has given you: **[JOIN_CODE]**
- The code is not case-sensitive (capital or lowercase letters both work)

### Step 6: Confirm the Class

- The app will show the **class name** (for example, "Year 3 Birch")
- Check this is correct and tap **Confirm**

That's it! Your child will now see their school spelling lists in the app alongside the built-in word lists.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### "The code isn't working"

- Check you have typed the code correctly -- it is 6 characters long
- The code is not case-sensitive, so capital and lowercase letters both work
- If the code has expired or been changed, contact your child's teacher for a new one
- Make sure your device is connected to the internet when entering the code

### "Can multiple children use the same device?"

Yes. Spell & Grow supports multiple profiles on one device. Each child has their own profile, and each can be linked to a different class with a different code.

To add another profile:
1. Open the Parent Area (tap the lock icon, enter your PIN)
2. Tap "Add Profile"
3. Create the new profile and link it to the appropriate class using its own code

### "What information does the school see?"

The school can see:
- Your child's **first name** (as entered in the profile)
- Which **spelling lists** your child has practised
- How many words your child got **correct** on each list
- Whether your child has **completed** each assigned list

The school **cannot** see:
- Your surname or any family details
- Your child's date of birth
- Any device information
- Any activity outside of school-assigned spelling lists
- Your email address or contact details

### "How do I unlink my child from the school?"

1. Open the Parent Area (tap the lock icon, enter your PIN)
2. Select your child's profile
3. Tap **"Unlink from School"**
4. Confirm the action

Unlinking removes your child's record from the school's system. Your child's progress on built-in word lists is not affected.

### "Do I need to pay for anything?"

No. School-assigned spelling lists are completely free. The app also includes free built-in spelling content. There is an optional paid subscription ("Spell & Grow Pro") that unlocks additional tiers and features, but this is entirely optional and is not required to use school spelling lists.

### "My child already uses Spell & Grow -- do I need to start again?"

No. If your child already has a profile in the app, simply link that existing profile to the school class. All their existing progress will be kept.

1. Open the Parent Area
2. Select your child's existing profile
3. Tap "Link to School" and enter the class code

### "We don't have a smartphone or tablet"

Please let your child's teacher know. The teacher can make alternative arrangements for spelling practice. The school may also have devices available for your child to use during the school day.
