Linking Your Child to Their School Class

What is Spell & Grow?
Spell & Grow is a free spelling app for children aged 4 to 13. Your child's school uses it to set spelling practice, and teachers can see how your child is getting on. The app is free to download and use — there is no cost to families for school-assigned spelling lists.

How to set up
Download the app
Search for "Spell & Grow" in the App Store (iPhone / iPad) or Google Play Store (Android) and install it. The app is free.
Create your child’s profile
When you first open the app, create a profile for your child. Enter their first name only (this is the only information shared with the school). Choose a difficulty tier and set a 4-digit parent PIN.
Open the Parent Area
Tap the lock icon in the top corner of the app and enter your 4-digit parent PIN.
Tap "Link to School"
In the Parent Area, you will see a "Link to School" option. Tap it.
Enter the class code
Type in the 6-character code your child’s teacher has given you. The code is not case-sensitive (capital or lowercase letters both work).
Confirm the class
The app will show the class name (for example, "Year 3 Birch"). Check this is correct and tap Confirm. Your child will now see their school spelling lists in the app.
What the school can and cannot see
The school can see
- Your child’s first name
- Which spelling lists your child has practised
- How many words your child got correct
- Whether each list has been completed
The school cannot see
- Your surname or family details
- Your child’s date of birth
- Any device information
- Activity outside school spelling lists
- Your email address or contact details
Frequently asked questions
The code isn’t working
Check you have typed the code correctly — it is 6 characters long. The code is not case-sensitive, so capital and lowercase letters both work. If the code still does not work, it may have expired or been changed. Contact your child’s teacher for a new one. Make sure your device is connected to the internet when entering the code.
Can multiple children use the same device?
Yes. Spell & Grow supports multiple profiles on one device. Each child has their own profile with their own progress, and each can be linked to a different class with a different code. To add another profile, open the Parent Area, tap "Add Profile", and link the new profile to the appropriate class.
My child already uses Spell & Grow — do I need to start again?
No. If your child already has a profile in the app, simply link that existing profile to the school class. All their existing progress will be kept. Open the Parent Area, select your child’s profile, tap "Link to School", and enter the class code.
How do I unlink my child from the school?
Open the Parent Area (tap the lock icon, enter your PIN), select your child’s profile, and tap "Unlink from School". This removes your child’s record from the school’s system. Your child’s progress on built-in word lists is not affected.
Do I need to pay for anything?
No. School-assigned spelling lists are completely free. The app also includes free built-in spelling content. There is an optional paid subscription that unlocks additional tiers and features, but this is entirely optional and is not required for school spelling lists.
We don’t have a smartphone or tablet
Please let your child’s teacher know. The teacher can make alternative arrangements for spelling practice. The school may also have devices available for your child to use during the school day.

Spell & Grow is made by Igloo Labs. The app is free, contains no advertisements, and does not track children. Only your child's first name and spelling progress are shared with the school.
